Hayley Atwell lands super role

Hayley Atwell has been cast in superhero movie 'Captain America: The First Avenger'.

The British actress will play the role of Peggy Carter opposite Chris Evan's portrayal of the titular character - which is due for release on July 22, 2011.

According to an official statement, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have written the script, and the film will be directed by Joe Johnston.

The movie will tell the tale of the early days of Steve Rogers, who takes part in an underground programme for the US military - leading him to become Captain America.

In the original Marvel comics Peggy falls in love with Captain America while they fight in World War II, but the big screen version will see the character updated.

Earlier this month, 'Sex and the City 2' actress Alice Eve was reported to be the favourite to land the role of Peggy, but casting directors settled on Hayley following second screen tests.

Hayley's career has been relatively quiet since 2008 when she starred in 'The Duchess' and 'Brideshead Revisited' and her next role sees her play Aliena in TV series 'The Pillars of Earth'
