Abused child dies, stepdad, mum held

(Suspect)
A three-year-old girl who is believed to have been brutally abused over a month by her stepfather, died early Wednesday morning.

A doctor who examined Jasmine Lee, found more than 30 bruises on her body and head of the child, identified as Jasmine Lee.

As the marks were consistent with injuries caused by beatings over a period of time, the doctor alerted the police.

Police arrested the child's 27-year old stepfather, a mechanic, who had brought her to Seri Kembangan community clinic, claiming that he had found her unconscious at their apartment in Bukit Serdang at 7.45am.

A police team then went to the house and questioned the girl's 24-year old monther before detaining her.

Subang Jaya police chief Asst Comm Zainal Rashid said the case has been classified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, adding that Jasmine's body had been sent for post-mortem.

He said the man and woman were being detained at the Subang Jaya police headquarters for further investigations.

It is learnt that the mechanic who married the woman about a year ago after she separated from her first husband, had lost his job recently. He had apparently been mostly spending his time in the apartment.

One neighbour said he had heard a child's cries and screams for several weeks.

Asst Comm Zainal appealed to residents in the area to come forward and assist the police.
