An infant girl's finger was severed allegedly due to medical negligence by a nurse at a child health institute here.
Authorities at Institute of Child Health said that the nurse had "unwittingly applied the scissors on the little finger of the baby's right hand while removing the plaster on the channel areas meant for saline administration."
However, the parents of the one-month-old baby had alleged that the nurse was talking on mobile phone while attending on the child on Friday.
A major portion of the finger was severed in the incident, a matron at the institute said, but denied the parents' charge.
The nurse was immediately suspended after the parents and residents of Ranaghat in Nadia district lodged a complaint with police.
The baby was admitted to the Institute early this month with complaints of respiratory distress.
Her right hand is still bandaged, while her respiratory condition has improved slightly. Doctors will decide on the next course of action in next few days, sources said.
