Cops doubt ISRO shootout story

Two men allegedly exchanged fire with a CISF guard at a high security complex of the Indian Space Research Organisation at a village on the outskirts of this IT city on Tuesday. But the police doubted that the shootout took place and ruled out any terror attack.

A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) constable reported that he was shot at by two masked men in the wee hours, forcing him to retaliate outside ISRO’s Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) facility in Byalalu village, 40 km from here.

IDSN was commissioned in 2008 for tracking orbit control and housekeeping operations of India’s lunar mission Chandrayaan-I.

No injuries were reported but the police were searching all medical facilities in the vicinity to check if anyone was being treated for bullet wounds.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) A R Infant told reporters that the police were ascertaining whether such an incident took place.

“We have neither found any spent bullets allegedly fired by the intruders nor have we come across any tyre marks of vehicles or footprints. No bullet marks were seen on the ISRO centre’s compound walls either,” he said at a press conference. The police have recovered six cartridges fired from the CISF guard’s gun.

In Delhi, Home Minister P Chidambaram said, “This seems to be an amateurish attempt made by two men with country-made pistols.” He said he has asked the CISF to carry out “another security review” of the area.
