Bangla headmaster suspended for prophet insult

A Hindu headmaster in Muslim-majority Bangladesh has been suspended for allegedly insulting the Prophet Mohammed, triggering street protests, police said on Tuesday.

Parents and clerics demonstrated outside the private school near the capital Dhaka after Biswajit Mazumder, 45, made the remarks in a religious studies lesson, local police chief Azizur Rahman said.

The headmaster, who denies making insulting remarks, has been suspended until an investigation is carried out, he added.

Bangladesh is home to the world's fourth-largest Muslim population.

The country of 144 million people, some 90 percent of whom are Muslims, experienced violent protests in 2006 after a Danish daily printed cartoons on the prophet.
