Triple murder probe zeroes in on taxi driver

As part of the investigations in the unsolved triple murder case reported in Ashok Nagar in November 2008, the city police have formed special teams to nab a call taxi driver, who had been engaged by one of the deceased and who has been missing since the murder.

According to a senior officer in the commissioner's office, the call taxi driver is one the 23 suspects listed by investigation officers.

The former Tamil Nadu Minerals Limited (TAMIN) managing director, S Saravanan (74), his wife Kasturi (70) and maid Anbarasi (17) were found murdered in Saravanan's house, next to the police training academy, in Ashok Nagar on November 20, 2008.

"Interrogation, which was slack for a few months, has gained momentum after the appointment of new T Nagar deputy commissioner of police K Shanmugavel. There is no need to reveal the investigation process now," the police officer said.

On Sunday, Shanmugavel visited the murder scene with some of his sub-ordinate officers. He was there for more than three hours and inquired about the case details. Police sources said a team headed by Ashok Nagar assistant commissioner of police K Paranthaman will function directly under the supervision of DCP Shanmugavel.

Some police sources revealed that the call taxi driver, who hails from Tiruvallur, had frequented Saravanan's house. He is said to have quit the call taxi firm three months before the murder. His wife and children live in a house in Jafferkhanpet but he hasn't visited the house ever since the murder was reported. "The suspicion about driver has not yet been confirmed. We can come to a conclusion only after interrogating him. He may know some leads to help us crack the case. Three special teams, each comprising a sub-inspector and two constables, are now hunting for the driver," a police officer said.

Though, many theories had been doing the rounds about a possible political involvement in the murder, the hunt for a call taxi firm driver appears to have given a new dimension to the case. It may be recalled that Saravanan, who was a professor in the geology department of Presidency College, was appointed chairman and managing director of TAMIN by former chief minister MG Ramachandran. He married Kasturi, who went on to become an under-secretary in the state home department. Saravanan was suspended by the then DMK government in 1989 for his alleged involvement in a mineral scam. However, he was reinstated in 1993 and allowed to retire from service.

According to the police, on November 19, 2008, Saravanan and Kasturi went to attend a function at a T Nagar hotel. Their driver Vellaisamy, a native of Sriperumbudur, dropped them home at 11 pm. The next day, the couple and their maid were found murdered.
