French woman assaulted, robbed in UP

A French woman was on Tuesday assaulted by unidentified men and robbed of her money, credit cards and passport outside the railway station in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur town, police said.

Alina Puska, 30, was beaten up and robbed early morning. She is being treated in a hospital, a police official said.

"Moments after Puska reached Kanpur by the Shiv Ganga Express, she was assaulted outside the railway station by three-four men, who fled with her bag containing foreign currency worth Rs 60,000, credit cards and some documents, including her passport," said the government railway police (GRP) inspector, Mr Rakesh Tiwari, in Kanpur, some 80 km from here.

"The miscreants attacked Puska with some blunt objects when she tried to defend herself and raise an alarm," he said.

According to GRP officials, a joint enquiry along with the district police has been initiated into the case. "We have got vital clues to nab the culprits," Mr Tiwari said.
